The Padre Hotel has been a shining light to downtown Bakersfield. The rich history of the building adds to it’s mystique and ambiance. Each room has it’s own decor and individuality. On the weekend the bar and lounge are flowing with cocktails, music and enjoyment.

Thai Palms Restaurant

As peculiar as a Koren Buddhist temple in Techapi seems so are the Thai Restaurants; so I made the drive to Techapi just to dine at Thai Palms. I had heard a lot about the food, but horrible stories about the waitress. On that particular day we found the waitress to be quite pleasant. All portions are made to share. The dishes were delightful but I enjoyed my order of shrimp/eggplant and Thai soup the most. If you’re a coffee drinker, try the Thai iced coffee. If you happen to overeat, you can relax with a massage on location right after your meal.

Junior League of Bakersfield is a non-profit organization in Kern County that focuses on improving the lives of women and children in the community.

Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra

The Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra is in it’s 77th season under the direction of John Farrer. This season I attended the Bohemian Rhapsody concert. There’s a distinctive feel in the air at a symphony that I just love. The sharp crisp sounds and the precision of the conductor were mesmerizing. At some point my head was bobbing with the beat. I enjoyed seeing the different age groups, young and old, come together on stage for their love of classical music. This was a great educational evening. RJ’s Restaurant & Sports Bar

If you’re looking for atmosphere RJ’s is the place. This is a great spot for groups. You can watch sports from every angle, the bar, or tables. Something about sports ignites excitement, and friendly conversations with strangers. ☺ We sat outside with a group of 6 and enjoyed the weather. RJ’s food is a step above bar food. They have all the typical bar items along with pasta, steak, and fancy salads. I most enjoyed the chicken chowder! They also have specials for the kids!! RJ’s is located at 9440 Hageman Rd.

I can remember the first time I saw the construction of Chick-fil-A on Stockdale. I was so excited I almost ran a red light trying to make sure my eyes were seeing the famous red & white Chick-fil-A sign. Chick-fil-A is one of my favorite, healthy ‘fast food’ joints! At Chick-fil-A the coleslaw is so good, a person who NEVER eats coleslaw, has to have it with her Chick-fil-A meal. Friday night my husband took me to Chick-fil-A. He had never eaten there before, so this was going to be a mouth watering experience. I let him scour at the menu for a while before I ordered a Chick-fil-A meal for both of us. It was crowded but we were able to snatch a booth; people watch and enjoy our waffle fries, coleslaw and sandwiches. My husband enjoyed his sandwich but didn’t care for the waffle fries. I was just happy to be eating my sandwich and coleslaw. Chick-fil-A is located at 5260 Stockdale Hwy.

Moo Creamery has been the hot new place since it recently opened. I checked them out on a Saturday night and it was more packed than any bar I’ve been to on a Saturday night. It was hustling with families, couples and tweens. Moo Creamery uses the freshest local products and makes the best homemade ice cream & burgers. Their prices are extremely reasonable compared to their quality. I loved their crispy fresh sliced pickles and their malts go perfect with a hamburger. Moo is all about families!! Sunday evenings at 5PM is family night at Moo. They serve a family style three-course dinner. Moo Creamery is located at 4885 Truxtun Ave. between Oak and Mohawk.

I think I finally found it!! Last night I didn’t feel like cooking so my husband suggested trying the new BBQ place on Rosedale, Fred’s Barbecue Factory. I ordered the ½ chicken entrée. After inquiring about the sausage, I added the Basque style sausage to my order. I love sausage, Chappell Hill Sausage is my favorite, so I didn’t expect much from is place. OMG the sausage was homemade and Delicious! They were so good I ate the leftovers this morning for breakfast. I will definitely be a regular at Fred’s but the next time I’ll ask them NOT to cut the sausage. You can dine-in at Fred’s but it’s small, more of a To Go spot. ☺ They also provide full catering services. Fred’s Barbecue Factory is located at 4208 Rosedale Hwy #309.

The Bakersfield Jazz Orchestra performed songs from the Harlem Renaissance Jazz Era tonight at The Nile Theatre. The popular Jazz songs were played with such enthusiasm that I wanted to jump up and Lindy Hop across the floor. They played one of my favorites; Take the “A” train. Music always feeds the soul, and I left The Nile full of Jazz. The Harlem Renaissance Jazz Tribute by the Bakersfield Jazz Orchestra was part of The Big Read Events. The Nile Theatre is located at 1721 19th St.

I thought no one gives you anything free any more until I called Guitar Center. I needed to get my husband’s guitar tuned, not knowing anything about a guitar assuming it would be expensive, I phoned Guitar Center and asked if they would tune the guitar. After the question came the awkward price pause…”it’s free just bring it in any day”. I couldn’t believe it, Free!! I quickly took the guitar by and they tuned it without any questions. And they informed me that they have a FREE class on learning how to tune your Guitar. ☺ Guitar Center is located at 3428 Ming Ave.

If you’re in the mood for speed, check out Superkart Racing. These Superkarts are really fast and fun. I did the practice session and my fastest lap was 25MPH. The course is shaped like a “2”, so it’s very curvy. As soon as you pick up speed it’s time to turn. Overall it was a pricy adrenaline rush! At Superkart Racing you can have birthdays, bachelor/bachelorette & corporate parties. It’s a great hang out place for the guys. They serve Beer and have video games. Rollerama Roller Skating Rink

I finally got the opportunity to go Roller Skating over the holidays. It was fun skating and reminiscing about MY Skating Days. Those were the days: on Friday Night, a packed Rink that wafted of Aqua Net hair spray and Eye of the Tiger. I used to rip through the rink, thinking I was cute with my hair teased in a banana clip. ☺ At Rollerama not much has changed since my days. You can still skate, hear great music, eat, and have birthday parties. The only difference is now you have the choice of roller skates or roller blades. At Rollerama they also have an area for skate boarders. Rollerama is located at 1004 34th St & 7850 Brimhall.

Being on the Computer all the time, you’re bound to have a Computer issue every once in a while and the people at Swat PC are extremely helpful and friendly. When I first found Swat PC, I didn’t have a computer problem, but I had an issue with getting a DVD to play on my Computer. I took the problem to Swat PC and they fixed my problem on the spot. I was impressed with their service and knowledge. Swat PC repairs computers, ipods, and do video conversion. Swat PC is located at 1931 Eye St.

We had a girl’s fun day at Camelot Park, and we were able to enjoy riding go-karts, and playing games, two things Kids love. I found myself being quite competitive on the go-karts. I played Pac Man, Space Invaders and Air Hockey: my favorite. I was very excited that I was able to enjoy the fun too. Unfortunately no one was up for Bumper Boats. ☹. I had almost forgotten how much I loved hard shell tacos, until a visit to Del Taco. I grew up heating taco shells in the oven for that crispy crunch, which I easily forgot after trying a soft taco. Last week I went through the drive through at Del Taco and decided on a classic hard shell taco. The shell was crispy, the meat seemed like real meat, and the lettuce and tomatoes were fresh. I didn’t know a business like Media Post existed until I wanted a copy of myself on KGET’s morning show. After being interviewed on KGET I contacted them for a copy of the show and they directed me to a company, Media Post that records all their footage. Yes, their job is to record ALL local News Programming. So if you ever need a copy, new or old, of something you saw on the news they are the ones you contact. Their office is Media mayhem, with monitors feeding you nothing but news. Media Post also copies and burns CD’s & DVD’s. The owner was great and really helped me out! ☺ Media Post is located at 903 H. St. #150.

We had company visiting from South Africa, so it was fitting that we ate at the Elephant Bar. This was only my second time eating at the Elephant Bar and they still didn’t win me over. I had a salad that was oversaturated with dressing; everyone else also complained about their orders. From now on I’ll stick around the bar and admire the African décor. Today was the grand opening of two local Fresh and Easy Neighborhood Markets. If you haven’t heard about Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets that’s probably because they just celebrated their one-year anniversary. Junior League of Bakersfield Wine Fest

The Junior League of Bakersfield had their annual Wine Fest November 22nd at Stier’s RV in the Auto Mall. I was on the decorating committee so I had the opportunity to help make the event shine with the theme “Starry Night”. This was my first Wine Fest, and I thoroughly enjoyed the night of elegance, that for me started on the red carpet and ended on a couch in the sports tent watching football and eating wings. ☺ Everyone had a great time consuming wine from local vineyards, eating, and bidding on auction items. I enjoyed the sports tent, and warmed up around the fire with billowing cigars. Next year I’ll be dressed for the Red Carpet! Kern County Museum

The Kern County Museum started their Clock Tower Holidays last night with the theme “Visions of Sugar Plums”. This annual event kicked off the Holiday Season with decorated Christmas trees and wreaths. Ten Christmas trees were on display with 2 unusual upside down trees. I had the opportunity to decorate one of the upside down trees, Easter. It took me a few days to visualize decorating an upside down tree but once I got started it turned out quite interesting and filled with Easter Spirit. It took me 12 hours to finish this tree. The food was provided by T.L. Golden West Casino

Golden West Casino is Bakersfield’s place to play. I have always been curious about checking it out, but never have. This weekend with the coaxing of family visiting we went to the Casino. My cousin researched Bakersfield and when she found out there was a Casino she was thrilled. I had my lucky $20 ready for the slots! We walked in and the place was more packed that I expected for a Sunday Evening. Every table was filled with men playing cards, drinking and having a good time. Aren’t they supposed to be at home watching Sunday Night Football? I guess a good card game trumps football! ☺ We walked around looking for the slots but they didn’t have any machines. They only have Casino card games. We were disappointed about no slots, so we sulked over a drink at the bar. My little secret is, I was glad to find out they have Blackjack & Poker, because I want to learn how to play. Golden West Casino is located at 1001 S. Union Ave.

The Guild House is the perfect place for a long lunch. The 1900’s home is amazing and the staff makes you feel right at home. The inside of the house is as splendid as the outside. I was so thrilled about finally eating at The Guild House. The staff was excited about the food and their service was enjoyable. The menu for the day included Sopa de Calabasas, Viennese Pork, and Bavarian Apple Tart. I haven’t had a 3 course lunch in quite some time, so my palate was ready. I savored each dish. If food isn’t enough for you, they also mix in a little Fashion. They had models walk around to each table describing their wardrobe from Christine’s Boutique. I think everyone should have The Guild House experience at least once. If you haven’t you’re missing out on a range of what Bakersfield has to offer. The Guild House is located at 1905 18th St, Monday-Friday for lunch. All proceeds are donated to the Henrietta Weill Memorial Child Guidance Clinic.

I’m not very fond of fast food, but I always feel that I’m eating healthy at Baja Fresh. Their food is always fresh, and the location I go to is very clean. Every Thursday, after Women’s fellowship, we congregate at Baja Fresh. I order either fish or blackened shrimp tacos. Mmmmmm ☺ Baja Fresh is located at 9660 Hageman Rd. #8.

Old Time Peddler’s Faire & Harvest Festival

The Old Time Peddler’s Faire & Harvest Festival is an annual event filled with antiques and whatnots. I love antiques, so I spent hours browsing through all the vendors. It’s amazing what you can find at the Faire. I wonder how and where people find such old and amazing pieces. The antiques that I was most startled by were the old medical tools; which were pretty gross when you think, these tools were once used during surgeries, and God knows what else! ☺ I enjoyed looking and strolling the museum grounds. I bought a two-disc collection of African American Entertainers, with artists dating back to 1920s. For more information about this annual event contact the Kern County Museum.

Via Arte Italian Street Painting Festival

This was the 10th annual Via Arte Italian Street Painting Festival. I was unenthused about going, but I finally dragged out Sunday around 5PM. I didn’t know what to expect but I didn’t expect such grand art with colored chalk in a parking lot. I was very impressed and inspired by what I saw.
