    Valentien Restaurant & Wine Bar

Posted by The Scoop On July - 13 - 2008

It was Valentien’s Bastille Day Celebration, which was celebrated like we were at Champs-Élysées. The restaurant’s décor was Red, White and Blue; the waiters were all well dressed in 50’s-60’s Mode Attire that included fishnet hose and hats for the women, and berets and the perfect mustache for the men; French movies with sub-titles were playing on the projector and the sounds of an Accordion livened the room. I was in awe of the atmosphere and kept thinking, all my husband and I need is a Gondola ride. We had the prix fixe 5 course meal, which was just enough to suit our taste buds. Since there were only two choices for each course we had the opportunity to sample the whole menu. We got lost in the courses because of the wine, and couldn’t figure out which one was the main course. But we enjoyed being able to try everything. We loved the mussels, mushroom & spinach crepe, Cassoulet, and the tuna and anchovy salad. I hate we missed the waiter race at 10:30, but we’ll check it out next year; and I’ll be in my fishnet, black panty hose. This was such a wonderful evening, the perfect date! Valentien is located at 3301 Truxtun Ave. #160.

    Mexicali

Posted by The Scoop On July - 10 - 2008

I had lunch today at Mexicali with two weekly regulars. One has been a weekly regular for years and couldn’t wait for me to have my first experience. We started by having a friendly chat with the owner and then getting down to business with a noon Margarita. I had Chile Verde and they had the taco meals. We all raved over our dishes. We had a lively lunch with interesting conversations, and a little Mexicali history. Mexicali is family owned and was founded in 1939. Mexicali is located at 5601 California Ave, and 631 18th St.

    Golden Hands Alterations

Posted by The Scoop On July - 9 - 2008

When I first moved here I had the hardest time finding a Tailor, then someone told me about Golden Hands Alterations.  I’m very picky about my alterations, especially my jeans because I spend a lot of money on them.  So when I dropped them off the first time, I thoroughly explained how I wanted them altered, and all he said was OK.  I anxiously waited for the time to pick them up, rehearsing what to say if they weren’t right.  Well to my surprise the jeans were perfectly altered.   I finally found myself a Tailor! Golden Hands Alterations is a little expensive, but it’s worth the investment.  Call for an appointment.

    Hourglass Kitchen & Bar

Posted by The Scoop On July - 8 - 2008

Hourglass has the new restaurant buzz so last night we chose this spot for a dinner date. Walking in I was impressed with the wine cellar, and the open feel, but I didn’t care for the black on black decor; black tablecloths, black chairs and booths. We ordered seafood chowder with Halibut, Chicken stuffed with bacon, goat cheese and asparagus, and pasta jambalaya with huge prawns. Amazing Dinner! It was so tasty we wanted to know the chef’s name. This was a quiet night, with only three tables occupied, so the service was superb. Hourglass is located at 1120 Calloway.

    Happy 4th of July

Posted by The Scoop On July - 4 - 2008

My first Bakersfield 4th of July…not to Shabby. ☺ I enjoyed the celebration with new friends. It was a patriotic event with a delicious meal, the chicken was mouthwatering, and the desserts were pleasing to my palate. We played Apples to Apples inside and outside they swam and played croquet. The evening ended with a Bang as we watched fireworks from the street. It was a great evening but I missed having BBQ, a Texas 4th of July staple, and was surprised that everyone popped fireworks in the residential streets.

    Marketplace Concert by the Fountain

Posted by The Scoop On July - 3 - 2008

The Waterfalls disappeared for the night, turning into a dance floor filled with all ages. Thee Majestics from East Bakersfield rounded the evening with Latin, Country, Oldies and R&B sounds. I kept looking at the stage thinking, there must be more than one group playing. I’ve never heard a group cover so many genres of music. No one could say, “They didn’t play anything I liked”. They were amazing!  Their sounds definitely “walk the streets of Bakersfield”. The Marketplace Concert by the Fountain takes place Thursdays 7-9PM from June-August.

    Sweet Surrender

Posted by The Scoop On July - 1 - 2008

I try to stay away from Sweets, but I’ve heard a lot of delightful things about this place, so I checked them out. I was under the impression Sweet Surrender was only a bakery, but believe me they’re much more. This store has the sugar the spice and everything nice. Sweet Surrender is a unique blend of sweets, gifts, women’s clothing and accessories. I had the small Tiramisu and I couldn’t put it away until it was all consumed. Sweet Surrender is located at 6439 Ming Avenue.
